My years of high school were the best years yet. Even though I was incredibly busy at every moment of the day, I managed to enjoy every minute of it. I took all honors and AP classes and sometimes struggled through them. I also participated in practically every club and activity my school had to offer. I took advantage of what my school provided, plus more.
My high school was unique because of its size. Each grade consisted of 200 kids, so the school was only 800. The class size didn’t exceed twenty-five people. Because I took all advanced classes, the teachers were a crucial part in the measure of how successful I was in the class. Each teacher in my school had such a unique personality and way of teaching. Some teachers emphasized the small number of kids in the class and made the class more discussion based, while a select few just lectured and didn’t establish relationships with the students. I established close relationships with all my teachers in each department except for the science department. I hate science and have always found it difficult. I think my teachers are what made me have this negative attitude towards all science. My teachers were not willing to teach kids how to learn, they all just lectured or showed movies. Besides the science department, I loved all my teachers and did well in all my classes. I am very grateful for the education I received. If it were not for my honors and AP teachers, I would not be as intelligent and interested in learning as I am today. I also would not have been on high honor roll in high school or in the Honors College now.
I did cheerleading all throughout high school and it was a great experience. I had a different coach each year, which definitely taught me how to adjust to differing situations and learn to respect changes. I was also a co captain for two years. That experience taught me not just the basis of my leadership abilities, but how to work together to be leaders.
I have always enjoyed taking Italian class but everything changed in high school. I joined Italian club in freshman year. I served as secretary in sophomore year and president for both junior and senior years. I was so passionate about the club and learning more about the language and culture. We organized fundraisers, planned a gala, raised thousands of dollars for Relay for Life, marched in the Columbus Day parade, cooked meals, worked at International Night, took trips to little Italy and much more. All my best friends were in Italian Club and I loved being in charge. Italian Club not only convinced me to pursue Italian and become fluent, but it also taught me responsibility and leadership because I had to take charge of an entire club.
I also participated in almost every musical group that my high school had and was in the music honor society since freshman year. I did choir and band as classes and was a leader in those classes. I was also in chamber choir for three years and marching band for all four years. My instrumental ability increased tremendously and I even learned how to play two instruments. Both my vocal passion and ability increased because of chamber choir and my private lessons. I also participated in every school musical. That was the highlight of my year. I loved doing the shows and every year I either had a solo, main part or was the dance captain. My confidence increased as a result of performing the leads in shows. I also danced more intensely than I ever had in high school. I joined a ballet academy for a year and learned to dance on Pointe. After that, I joined a new dance studio and my dancing ability increased to a huge extent. I learned technique and really looked up to my teachers who were all either Broadway dancers or in a well known dance company. I also enjoyed dancing more because I made some good friends. It became my goal to dance as much as possible in order to increase my ability even more.
One of my most influential teachers was my math teacher who I had for two years, Mr. Berto. I was so scared of his class in freshman year and I still remember getting a 42 on my first test in that class. It was the worst grade I ever got and I cried and ran out of his class. Ever since then he tried to win me over and we developed a very close relationship. He understood exactly how I learned and knew how to help me. In his classes, I didn’t hate math. He was also the funniest teacher I’ve ever had. He acted more like a friend than a teacher. I know I will never have a relationship with a teacher like that again. I look up to him and wish I could have my students like me as much as everyone liked him. I also owe all of my math success to him, without him I could never have survived any of the math classes I did.
Lastly, my Italian teacher, whom I had since seventh grade, is responsible for influencing my life in every way. Mrs. Maiello has served as my second mom throughout high school. She has known me longer than any other teacher and she influenced my career decision. I loved learning Italian from her class and outside the classroom I could talk to her about anything and she could do the same. We bonded as family would, rather than as a student and teacher would. I thank Mrs. Maiello for sharing her passion for Italian with me and convincing me to pursue Italian.
The subjects I succeeded in and the teachers who taught me all I know are much appreciated and I only hope to be as inspiring as they were to me. High School was the most amazing times of my lives, thanks in part to my teachers, and extra circulars.
